A regional medical center was looking for ways to reduce their annual spend on replacing high value medical equipment that went missing. A typical acute care facility maintains millions of medical devices that cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $50 thousand or more.

Financial burdens coupled with challenges like equipment hoarding, accidental loss and theft have forced healthcare facilities to look for more cost effective ways to prevent unnecessary spend.


The regional medical center used THINaër’s platform and easy Asset Tracking solution to gain a comprehensive view of high value inventory. The solution includes industrial beacons capable of emitting proximity information, enterprise-grade gateways capable of capturing beacon information and Sonar, a web-based dashboard that displays real-time information about critical assets.

To gain real-time insights into their assets, the facility management and THINaër implementation services teams placed industrial beacons on a variety of moveable medical devices. From wheelchairs to infusion pumps, moveable medical devices and high value assets were outfitted with beacons, transforming them into smart devices capable of providing real-time location information. To capture that location information, enterprise-grade gateways were placed throughout the hospital to capture movement details about the assets containing beacons. But how does that translate to real-time data that drives down the cost of replacing equipment?

Built on a flexible but robust platform, Sonar is the web-based dashboard that displays captured location information in a human-readable format that anyone can use to understand where devices are, how they’re being used and if they’re truly missing or simply misplaced.


Over the course of the pilot, the hospital learned that they were spending nearly 5% more than they needed to replacing equipment that wasn’t really missing. And in an industry where a single ventilator might cost $22 thousand, preventing even one from going missing has the potential to make a substantial impact.
